Summer in Kristen’s Garden – FineGardening

by admin

Today we visit Kristen Lembold’s beautiful gardens.

Hello! It’s 90°F here in Virginia, but the gardens are lush. Her three grandchildren are with us for the month of July and are happy to hunt for insects, harvest vegetables and cut flowers for table centerpieces. Then cool down in the pool.

I garden on an urban/suburban acre. I’m a gardener, and her husband Chris designs and builds stone paths and garden structures, cheerfully lays mulch, and creates mulch for vegetable beds. This garden was featured on GPOD during the spring season about ten years ago. (Spring in Christens Garden, Virginia). Since then, we’ve added a screened porch and porch garden and love spending three seasons of the year there.

Given the season and grandchildren’s visits, there are a few shabby spots (hosta leaves and seed heads) that might need to be trimmed (eventually trimmed by me!), but I’ve included additional photos to give you a better feel for the garden.

Large garden bed with large shrubs and perennialsWith plenty of shrubs mixed in with perennials, it requires less maintenance and gives you a garden that looks great all year round.

Garden bed with small trees and large variegated hostaLuxurious hosta (Hosta Hybrids, zones 4 to 9) are found below Acer maple (Acer palmatezones 5-9).

Lawn garden path with lavender and other flowersMany summer flowers are blooming, including lavender (lavenderzones 5-8 on the left) smell very refreshing on hot summer days.

I have more shrubs and perennials in my gardencorn flour (Echinacea purpurazones 4-9) bloom around the shrubs here.
